Family Law Matters and Limited Scope Representation
Family law is an area of law where limited scope representation can work well in certain cases. For example, a client in a divorce may need assistance with filing an answer to a complaint for divorce or responding to a motion. Through limited scope representation, the attorney and the client decide which aspects of the case the attorney will handle and which aspects of the case the client will handle. Once an agreement is reached, an engagement letter clearly identifying and designating the tasks that each will perform is signed by both the client and the attorney.
Examples of individual services that an attorney can provide through LSR include:
Limited scope representation does not mean that a client receives second rate legal services, as the attorney is still required to provide competent representation in accordance with Michigan’s Rules of Professional Conduct and other law just as an attorney would through full representation.
Is Limited Scope Representation Right for You?
Limited scope representation, or unbundled legal services, can be a great fit for an informed client who is competent to handle their legal matter but may want assistance with the more complicated parts of the case. By only paying an attorney for the parts of a case that the client cannot do alone, limited scope representation can save money on legal fees.
